Whatcom County

Whatcom County is home to the Bellingham Mt. Baker region. It is the northernmost county in Washington, containing 2,151 square miles that border on British Columbia, Canada to the north, Okanogan County to the east, Skagit County to the south and the Straight of Georgia to the west.

Much of the county is mountainous (and part of National Forest and National Parks). Fifty miles east of Bellingham lies the highest peak in the North Cascade mountain range, Mount Baker (10,778 feet), an ice-clad volcano.

Our county was created by territorial legislature on March 9, 1854. At that time, Whatcom County took in all of present-day Skagit, Island and San Juan counties. For a brief history of the county click here.
