Recreation Northwest Announces 2014 Bellingham Race Dates

Recreation Northwest will host three multi-sport race events in Bellingham, WA in 2014: the Kulshan Quest, the Bellingham Kids Traverse and the Bellingham Traverse.

Introducing the Kulshan Quest Adventure Race

The Quest Adventure Race Series includes the first-ever Kulshan Quest, taking place June 21, 2014 in Bellingham. Solo racers and teams of two, three or four will paddle Bellingham Bay, and run and mountain bike through the Fairhaven historic district and the Chuckanut Mountains. Participants will use maps and compasses to navigate through a series of checkpoints, with an emphasis on teamwork.

Northwest Traverse Multi-Sport Series

The Northwest Traverse Multi-Sport Series includes two Bellingham events: the Vacationland RV Bellingham Kids Traverse and the Vital Choice Bellingham Traverse.

  • Bellingham Kids Traverse: The Vacationland RV Bellingham Kids Traverse will be Saturday, June 29, 2014 at Civic Field. Children ages six through 12 are invited to participate on solo (Chinook), tandem (Coho) and relay (Chum) teams, with a one-mile run, a 1.5-mile bike ride, a .5-mile obstacle course and a .25-mile team trek to the finish line. All finishers receive a ribbon and Mallard ice cream, while the top three in each age group will receive awards.
  • Bellingham Traverse: The 2014 Vital Choice Bellingham Traverse will be Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014. Companies, organizations and individuals are invited to compete in the solo (Chinook), tandem (Coho) and relay (Chum) divisions. The Bellingham Traverse course is comprised of a 5.5-mile run, a 6-mile mountain bike, an 18-mile road bike, a 3.4-mile trail run, a 3.6-mile paddle, and a .65-mile team trek to the finish line at Boundary Bay Brewery.

Both Traverse events celebrate the life cycle of wild salmon with a symbolic tribute to the natural and urban challenges of their journey through life. The courses will challenge teams and individuals, while highlighting the City of Bellingham’s parks, facilities, Greenways trails, bicycle-friendly roads and water sports access. Participants range from hard-core competitors to those in costume, focused on fun.

“Our goals for the Northwest Traverse Series and Quest Adventure Races are to promote fun and recreation, while increasing salmon awareness and stewardship of our shared outdoor spaces,” said Todd Elsworth, Executive Director of Recreation Northwest.

The 2014 Northwest Traverse series begins with the Sun Mountain Lodge Winthrop Traverse on June 14 and continues with the Centro Olympia Traverse on July 26 and the Alaska Airlines North Bend Traverse on September 6, wrapping up in Bellingham.
