Snow-capped Mount Baker towering on the horizon draws the eye like a magnet. Part of the fascination is Mount Baker’s other persona: It is a volcano, an ominous outlet for powerful, deep-earth forces.

Mount Baker is even more attractive up close. On a day when not a cloud mars the brilliant blue sky, I drive the Mount Baker Highway, which gently rises under a canopy of tall moss­covered trees with branches like the green hairy arms of giants.
