Skiing the Cascades in Oregon, Washington and California

Alpine skiing was introduced to the Pacific Northwest in the late 19th century, not too many decades after the modern sport emerged in Norway. It began to boom after luxurious Sun Valley, built in Idaho by the Union Pacific Railroad, installed the first chairlift (based on tropical banana hoists) in December 1936. Read full story here.
