Spring is upon us, and the snow is melting in the mountains! This is the ideal time to observe fascinating organisms making use of the melt water in an ecology niche unique to western North America.
Come learn about the fungi and slime molds of the snowmelt with local expert mycologists Jack Johnson and Lauren Ré. Mt. Baker is one of the best habitats for unique snow-dweller fungi species. On this field trip, you will learn why that is and have an opportunity to get up close and personal with these special fungi! Mini lectures will give you tools to identify snowmelt fungi, insights into their unique ecology, and the conservation concerns around these species. As we explore, we will aim to find a rare species, Hygrophorus goetzii, as a part of a 5-year project tracking this elusive fungus’s distribution. This will be a fun outing! Come learn with us!
