Gary Lewis “The Complete Talk on Ground Covers"

Gary Lewis owns Phoenix Perennials in Richmond, BC, with over 5000 varieties of plants worldwide. Gary will highlight the functional and aesthetic uses of ground covers in the landscape, including tips and tricks for designing with ground covers to take your outdoor space to the next level and discussing the diverse ways ground covers can make gardens more sustainable. You’ll see photographs from gardens on four continents and an amazing array of different plants, styles, and designs.

Ground covers offer a diverse range of beautiful and intriguing options with a variety of colors, textures, and forms. They can unify a landscape, knit together plantings and hardscape, and add extra layers of beauty, dynamism, and surprise. As a replacement for lawns, they can reduce our use of water, fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, and carbon-based fuels and transform a yard into a diverse landscape of habitat and food for native insects, birds, and other wildlife.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
