The road to Artist Point, the final 2.7 miles of State Route 542/Mount Baker Highway, is closed for the season.

Controlled Ikat or Warp Painting Open Studio

Some previous dying experience is required for this open studio as there will be a host but no instructor.

If you’re interested in making painted warps or ikat warps with some measure of control, we have a “warping board” you might enjoy. It is devised to allow you to lay out your warp, then paint, Ikat-tie, or print your design on it. Then it’s off to the dye-pot to provide you with a lovely one-of-a-kind warp. Come try out this new type of warping board! For this dye day, you should provide the warp fiber prepared for dyeing.

Please come with your warp yarn scoured (and mordanted if your dye would require that), and wound into balls for easy handling. Make a note of the dry weight of your warp yarn. We have a range of dyes on hand, or you may bring your own. On hand, we have acid dyes, Procion MX dyes, natural dyes, and an indigo vat. Wear old clothes, so you won’t mind if you get a little dye on yourself.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
