The road to Artist Point (the final section of SR 542) and Highway 20 (starting at Ross Dam Trailhead) are both closed for the season.

Raku Workshop

A 2-day workshop that will cover standard and horse hair raku pottery firing. Each day will be 6hrs duration (the additional 2hrs to enable additional firings if needed). Each student will be provided with two simple bisqued pieces, one for each type of firing. Additional pre-prepared pieces will be available for sale ($20 each). Students are encouraged to bring up to 2 pieces of their own to be fired in either raku or horse hair.

Day 1: Focused on prepping and firing raku pieces. Following a brief glazing demo, students with glaze their own pieces. When enough pieces are glazed to fill the raku kiln, firings will commence. While firings are going on students can glaze additional pieces as needed. Each firing takes roughly 1hr. It is estimated that 2-4 firings will be required to fire all pieces.

Day 2: Horse hair is typically applied to pieces that have been coated with Terra Sigillata (TS). The day will start with a demo of how TS is applied.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
