Out and About: Harvesting and Cooking with Nettle

Out and About is an affinity program developed by, and for, members of the queer community. Join us for an inclusive outdoor experience with other queer folks to foster community, play outdoors, and connect with local nature.

Are you curious about harvesting wild plants but don’t know where to start? This month we will learn about the tenets of honorable harvest and the basic rules to follow while harvesting anything from the wild. We will have a strong focus on Stinging Nettle, and will learn how to safely harvest and prepare it for cooking. We will practice the safest ways to harvest nettle, harvest our bounty then use it to brew nettle tea and make nettle pesto to enjoy in the field as we appreciate evening views on the lake.

Starts: May 09, 2026

Time: 4 - 6 p.m.

Admission: Free/Donation-Based

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
