Finding Yourself in Art, A Creative Writing Workshop with Tara Campbell

Have you ever looked at a painting or sculpture and wondered what inspired the artist? Or tried to imagine the story behind an artwork? Join author Tara Campbell for a closer look at selected works from the current exhibition Personal to Political: Celebrating the African American Artists of Paulson Fontaine Press.

Through the creative writing process, Tara invites people to form new relationships with galleries and museums. In this workshop, participants will develop a draft of a poem inspired by one of the works in the exhibition, as well as techniques they can use to explore other works of art in the future. Tara will use guided observations and personalized writing exercises to help you go beyond an artwork’s printed description and see new ways of looking at an object.

This event is free to attend thanks to generous support from Humanities Washington, but advance registration is required to reserve your spot, and seats are limited.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
