The League of Women Voters of Bellingham & Whatcom County joins communities across the nation as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment and the formation of the League of Women Voters!
To open this Centennial Celebration, the LWVBWC has partnered with the Ralph Munro Institute for Civic Education to bring acclaimed author Elaine Weiss to the main stage of the WWU Performing Arts Center on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 pm.
Ms. Weiss will discuss her book The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote, which tells the dramatic story of the final battle in the war to win women the right to vote. Here in Washington, women had been voting for a decade prior to the passage of the constitutional amendment, but suffragists in other states faced vicious opposition from politicians, clergy, and corporations. How did the core themes of American history – race, class, money, gender, state’s rights, power, and democracy – all come into play in Nashville, Tennessee, in the summer of 1920 when the deciding votes were cast to ratify the 19th Amendment?
