We’ve enjoyed a fabulous stretch of good weather this summer so unless you’re so tied down with honey-do tasks that you can’t see straight, you’ve probably knocked plenty of rust and cobwebs off your clubs by now. That means you can—and most definitely should—use your summer skills to take advantage of the opportunities to support the many local fund raising events that are going on all around you.
My article for ScenicWA.com last summer on “Golfing for the right reasons” detailed an event at Shuksan Golf Course that John Busch at Lithtex NW invited me to play. Besides raising money for the cause (Arthritis Foundation), it was just plain giddy fun. These events are typically scramble formats and let you buy mulligans so shooting really low scores that you would rarely achieve on your own are quite likely, and in a ridiculous way, kind of ego boosting.
Here are a few upcoming opportunities for you to get out of the office to play some golf this summer… for all the right reasons!
The Whatcom County Opportunity Council is hosting an event called “Golf Fore Good!” that will be held on Friday, August 2 at Shuksan Golf Course. Your registration fee covers your green fees, golf cart, driving range, putting contest, player gifts, breakfast, lunch on the turn, hole-in-one contest, awards banquet, raffle tickets, and drink cart tickets. This will be fun day on the golf course while supporting a great cause; helping local children who are disadvantaged or in very low-income families. Call 360-734-5121 Ext 301 for more information.
The Whatcom County Association of Realtors in joining forces with NAIFA to put on a tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity. This event will be held at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club on Thursday August 8. Money raised through this tournament will help provide much needed funding to build homes in our community that will make a huge difference to local Whatcom County families in need of a hand up and willing to invest some sweat equity. The 6th Annual Whatcom Hospice Pro-Am Golf Classic will be held Friday, August 23 at Lake Padden Golf Course… one of the county park system’s true treasures. The event actually begins the night before at the Hotel Bellwether with a BBQ dinner and a chance to bid on a local golf pro to join your team. It will also feature a long drive contest in front of the hotel out into the bay using floating balls! How cool is that? The goal of the tournament is to raise funds for Whatcom Hospice to assess medical needs, provide social and spiritual services, and offer comfort and support for patients and their families.
A tournament called “Putts Fore Pets” is being held on Thursday, August 29 at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club to benefit the Whatcom Humane Society. The format is a two-person scramble, and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, warm-up range balls and use of the driving range, full buffet dinner following the tournament. What a great excuse to take an early leave for the Labor Day Weekend while supporting the animal care and adoption services for which the Humane Society is famous!
I’m absolutely certain that I have not even scratched the surface of the opportunities that are available this summer to play hooky and golf while supporting a wide variety of excellent causes. Please add a comment to this blog if you have any upcoming golf events you’d like to promote to my 9.5 readers not counting my mom.
Go. Play. Golf (Fore Good). But be forewarned… you’ll run the risk of being labeled a “do gooder!”
