Sustainable Connections and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism have teamed up to showcase what Whatcom County has to offer this spring. For those looking to plan spring break getaways, the organizations are encouraging locals to “vacation like a local” and plan a staycation this year.
Their suggestions range from local pet-friendly accommodations to outdoor activities, shopping, dining, spas, and take-out. With spring break on the horizon, both organizations wanted to provide vacation ideas around Whatcom County as an easy way for the community to support local businesses. Due to many COVID-19 restrictions, businesses are struggling and could use the extra support.
Some of the businesses featured in the staycation promotion also participate in the Whatcom Think Local First Gift Card program. Recently released in November 2020, The Whatcom Think Local First Gift Card is a community-based digital gift
card that makes it easy to keep money circulating in our local economy. Purchasers can write a personal message to send along with the gift card to friends and loved ones via email, text, or even print out a physical copy and mail it with a card.
The gift cards can be used at over 250 locally-owned Whatcom County Businesses. Currently, any fees associated with purchasing the gift cards are covered by the Whatcom Community Foundation.
Locals are encouraged to share their favorite Whatcom County staycation spot on either organizations’ Facebook or Instagram accounts with the hashtag #StaycateLikeSquatch for a chance to win a $100 Whatcom Think Local First Gift Card.
