The Nutcracker Dec. 5 - 6, 2018 at Mount Baker Theatre

OPUS Performing Arts is proud to present The Nutcracker in collaboration with Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY) on December 5-6, 2018, 7 p.m. at Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham, WA. Audiences will enjoy this classic winter ballet with a unique theatrical twist. The Nutcracker will feature OPUS’ younger ballet students as cupcakes, peppermints, gingersnaps and other denizens of the Kingdom of Sweets, as well as their advanced dancers in the iconic roles of Dewdrop, Nutcracker Prince, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. OPUS adult ballet students will also perform in supporting roles throughout the evening. BAAY performers ages 9-16 will be showcased as the infamous rat army, manipulators of large-scale puppets, and in choral interludes. "This is a truly unique approach to The Nutcracker for our Bellingham audience. Never before have these two youth-centric arts organizations taken upon a task of this scope and depth. We will lead our students in discovering new, collaborative tools through the process and ultimately deliver an unforgettable rendition of a classic tale," said Ian Bivins, Executive Director of BAAY. "The challenge to do something new, yet familiar, is at the forefront of my creative vision for this project. The students are so ready to be working with each other and we look forward to seeing how they grow,” said Brooke Evans, Artistic Director, OPUS. This exciting new performance is guaranteed to delight viewers of all ages. Tickets are $20 general and $12 for kids age 12 and younger. To purchase tickets, visit mountbakertheatre.com. The Mount Baker Theatre is located at 104 N Commercial St, Bellingham, WA 98225. About OPUS: Established in 2013, OPUS Performing Arts provides high-quality dance instruction in a positive atmosphere. The professional faculty at OPUS are highly experienced, mature, knowledgeable, and are generous with encouragement. All classes focus on fostering a lifelong love of dance while addressing proper foundations and technique. Instructors are dedicated to dance education and instilling invaluable skills that promote personal growth and artistic self-expression. OPUS strives to build skills in our students that extend beyond their dance training: self-confidence, discipline, respect, work ethic and self-care. About BAAY: Founded in 2006, Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth is a nonprofit arts education organization that offers quality instruction in theater, choir, dance, music, and visual arts to youth, ages 5-17. A beloved fixture in Bellingham's thriving arts community, the organization has produced over 100 musicals to date. In addition, BAAY strives to reach new members of the community through its other two branches: the BAAY Preschool and the BAAY EduArts enrichment program, which offers over 20 arts classes per quarter to elementary students throughout Whatcom County.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
