Tony’s Coffee, in Bellingham Washington, recently named 2021 Roaster of the Year, has another big company milestone to celebrate—50 years of roasting delicious craft coffee and espresso. To commemorate this milestone year, the team roasted up Tony’s 50th Anniversary Blend featuring organic, fair trade, shade-grown coffee from Ethiopia and Central America. “When you blend a citrusy coffee from Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, with a creamy, chocolaty coffee from Central America, you end up with a balanced and delicious cup,” states David Yake, director of sales and sustainability.”
“Throughout the year, we will look for ways to support farmers, care for the planet, and celebrate all-things-coffee,” states Yake. “While this momentous occasion is celebratory, we remain grounded in our mission to fight climate change and hope that by sharing our journey we can encourage other sustainably minded companies to join the challenge.”
“Tony’s is a true sustainable coffee pioneer that has put farmers at the heart of its business from day one,” said Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA. “It’s wonderful to see them honored as Roaster of the Year! We look forward to continuing the momentum with them to grow fair trade’s impact and help build resiliency for farmers across the world.”
Tony’s Coffee Journey to Carbon Neutral
“You can’t offset what you don’t measure,” states CEO Todd Elliott. “One of the first things we did, with the encouragement and support from our longtime grocery partner, PCC Community Markets, was a partner with Climate Collaborative who provided resources to help us progress with our sustainability goals.” Tony’s Coffee challenges other companies to visit Climate Collaborative and start the process.
“Tony’s Coffee has a long and proud history of investing in coffee sustainability,” states Vern Long, CEO of World Coffee Research. “As the company looks ahead to its next 50 years, World Coffee Research is proud to call them a partner in the global, collaborative effort to ensure the future of coffee through research and innovation to benefit farmers.”

About Tony’s Coffee: In 1971, the smell of freshly roasted coffee came to Bellingham, Washington. The family-owned company continues to roast in small batches, selecting the highest quality, shade grown, GMO-free, organic, fair trade coffees from farmer-owned cooperatives. Tony’s is a leader in the sustainable coffee movement, and recently became one of the country’s first carbon neutral roasteries.
