Surprise Chef, with guests

Surprise Chef crafts a distinctive sound that fuses cinematic soul, funk, and jazz with an adventurous and experimental edge, drawing from 1970s film scores, hip-hop production, and deep groove sensibilities. Emerging from spontaneous analogue sessions in 2017, the Australian band quickly honed a rich, immersive style defined by warm textures, hypnotic rhythms, and intricate arrangements.

Their latest album, Superb, embraces a freer, more spontaneous approach, blending David Axelrod’s orchestral depth with the infectious pulse of Timbaland and The Neptunes. Tracks like the pounding, glockenspiel-laced “Bully Ball” and the synth-heavy “Body Slam” push their sonic boundaries, while soulful ballads like “Dreamers Disease” highlight their evolving artistry. Renowned for their dynamic live performances and praised by the likes of Questlove and DJ Nu-Mark, Surprise Chef continues to redefine instrumental music with their emotive, forward-thinking sound.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
