Whatcom Land Trust will host a virtual live-stream event and award the Bob Keller Business Conservation Leadership Award to Alcoa Intalco Works on Wednesday, October 7 from 8:00-8:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to this free event, which is also a fundraising event to support the Trust’s mission and current initiatives in Whatcom County. The Land Trust’s Business Conservation Leaders Event celebrates the strong relationship between conservation, recreation, agriculture and business, and recognizes our business supporters whose collective investment benefits land conservation and stewardship in our community. Working together, we contribute to our economic well-being and help to define our community’s high quality of life.
Each year Whatcom Land Trust recognizes a noteworthy business with a leadership award named for former Land Trust board member Bob Keller. This year’s award goes to Alcoa Intalco Works in recognition of its robust employee volunteer program that has contributed thousands of field hours to benefit not only Whatcom Land Trust, but our entire local nonprofit community, and for its financial support through the Alcoa Foundation to protect Whatcom’s special places.
“We are thrilled to award the 2020 Bob Keller Business Conservation Leadership Award to Alcoa Intalco Works,” said Land Trust Executive Director Gabe Epperson. “On behalf of all of us at Whatcom Land Trust, I appreciate this opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ to Alcoa Intalco Works and its employees. For more than 50 years the actions of Intalco have made a positive impact to improve wildlife habitat, to inspire youth development, and to make community enhancements throughout our county. While the plant’s curtailment leaves a big hole in our Whatcom family of businesses and nonprofit organizations that can’t be refilled, Alcoa’s decades of generosity will endure in the legacy of lands, wildlife, and people their gifts have made possible.”
The virtual event will feature a breakfast ‘toast’ to our business supporters, a program update of the Land Trust’s recent successes and current initiatives, presentation of the Bob Keller Business Leadership Award, and a video retrospective featuring stories from a number of Alcoa employees and representatives of local nonprofit organizations who also wish to express their gratitude and appreciation. Livestream guests will also be invited to make a gift to support the Trust’s mission and ongoing conservation efforts.
On Saturday, October 24, Whatcom Land Trust will host an Alcoa Employee Appreciation Day from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Trust’s Kelsey Preserve in Ferndale. Alcoa employees have volunteered hundreds of hours and planted hundreds of trees and shrubs at the Kelsey Preserve. There is no charge and everyone is invited to participate in a self-guided interpretive walk through the preserve.
