Best Northwest Great Lake Adventures: Ross Lake Resort

Scoring a floating cabin at Ross Lake Resort take a little planning. Many of this year’s visitors will sign up for next year before they depart- which means most cabins are spoken for a year in advance (reservations are not accepted beyond a year). But it’s worth the planning. THe best way for a newbie to get in is by getting on the waiting list and being flexible is an opening does turn up.

The cabins strung together in a picturesque line on the west side of Ross Lake, face jagged, snow-capped North Cascades peaks. The accommodations were originally constructed to house workers building Ross Dam beginning in 1937, and then served as base camp for the U.S. Forest Service by the time Jack Kerouac and Gary Snider slept their way up to fire lookout duty in the mid-1950’s. Ross Lake has operated the cabins and adjoining marina as a floating lodge since those halcyon days. While each of the dozen family cabin and three bunkhouses come with its own bathroom and kitchen.
