The Sleeping Giant - The North Cascades

We tried to hike to Hidden Lake Lookout in the North Cascades one May, but the road was closed due to snow. A few weeks later, my friend Eric and I tried again, driving three hours from Vancouver, B.C., to the trailhead. Our two-wheeldrive Subaru made it up the bumpy old logging road, albeit slowly. For the first part of the 8-mile round-trip hike we were walking through evergreen forest. Then we popped out into alpine terrain, where in spring and summer you find flower meadows or, in our case, snowy avalanche chutes. Read full feature here.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
