In Praise of Cheeses in Whatcom County, Washington

Cheese in the state of Washington has come a long way in the past 13 years. Back in 2005, there were only six cheesemakers toiling away, but today there are more than 70. Whatcom County, just south of the British Columbia border, is home to Four of them, and, if you meet them, you'll find they're all humble about what they do and Fastidious about the source of their ingredients. They all pour talent and passion into their vats, creating some of the richest, creamiest, most satisfying cheese in the country. Check out this feature highlighting cheese from Appel Farms, Pleasant Valley Dairy, Twin Sisters Creamery and Ferndale Farmstead, here.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
