After a winter like we've had, clearing mountain highways isn't an easy task. On Route 542 - the highway leads to Mount Baker Ski Area in the winter and another 2.5 miles to Artist Point in the summer - the task might have seemed insurmountable to the uninitiated. The Washington State Department of Transportation sent its crews up first in April, and then in May, to start looking at how the job might be done. As winter clung to the Pacific Northwest, so it clung to the area around Artist point, making the job of the WSDOT crews all the tougher. At times, the crew worked seven days a week to get the road clear, encounters 70-food snow drifts while snow, rain and fog made their work much tougher. Read full story here.
