WWU Opera Presents: Family Ties - A Trio of American Opera

Award-winning WWU Opera offers a vibrant presentation of three American one-act operas tied together by the thread of family. The story begins in the 1950s with Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge opening a window into the complicated inner thoughts of two couples as they play the iconic card game. Set a generation later is Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone revealing young lover Ben creatively navigating around his intended fiancé Lucy’s preoccupation with chatting on the telephone. Finally, Ned Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters with a libretto by Gertrude Stein invites the audience into the imaginary world of five children playing a surreal yet humorous game of murder before bedtime.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
