Ted Gibson Retrospective: Photography, Children's Lunchboxes and More!

Documentarian and political artist, Ted Gibson’s (1944–2024) collection of histories of “ordinary people,” are being presented together for the first time at Dakota Art Gallery! Revealing Gibson’s lifetime of creative passion and profound insights, this retrospective exhibit includes 40 archival photographs showing the magic found on the highway, in quiet places and at special events, along with several series of works, most notably his Children's Lunchboxes and a collection of drawings with apropos quotations called Dick and Jane in Retrospect which juxtapose trite Americana with scenes from the dark side of American Capitalism.

“Dakota Art Gallery is excited and honored to celebrate the life and art of Ted Gibson. We hope this diverse collection will resonate with viewers, highlighting the lives and struggles of ordinary and marginalized people, and connecting the issues of the 1970s and 1980s with our current political, social, and environmental challenges.” Alan Weydert, Dakota Art.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
