Per popular demand, we will be offering Women’s fit T-shirts for female competitors this year. We will also continue to offer the first 20 complete High School Teams to register, FREE ENTRY to participate in Ski to Sea again this year. Help us spread the word by letting students and educators know about this opportunity! In 2017, we began an annual tradition of awarding one free community team to a local non-profit organization.
Teams that would like to bring awareness to a local non-profit or charitable organization, should contact email@example.com for a community team request form. Submissions are due by February 17th and we will notify the lucky 2019 community team by February 24th.
Below is some content that you may find interesting for a feature story…
- In 2019, we had our first 3-person team compete in the Race, ANMLY CAFÉ. This team comprised of three male racers finished 124th overall (out of 419 teams) and 13th in the Whatcom County Open Division, completing the 93-mile course in 8:45:15. A member from the team is available for interviews with notice.
- Last year I was contacted by the mother of Jake Merrill who is interested in facilitating acknowledgment and thank-you to Jake’s buddies who race in Team JAKE, while also recognizing Jake and his huge enthusiasm for the outdoors. “Jake grew up here in Bellingham where he had a huge local community of friends and family. He graduated from WWU with an emphasis in Outdoor Leadership in December of 2013. During his first professional job as an assistant ski guide in Oregon, he died in an avalanche in February of 2014. Jake had been involved in the Ski to Sea race two or three times alongside many of the friends who continue to participate each year in his name. We have been so touched by his friends who continue to honor him each year, racing as Team JAKE. They remain friends of our family and carry Jake with them into the world. The first year they raced as Team JAKE (May 2014) they raised money to help kick-start The Jake Merrill Outdoor Leadership Scholarship at Western Washington University which is now an amazing endowment that provides financial to support a student each year.”
- Whatcom Events is pleased to announce its Charitable Contributions to local non-profit organizations for 2019 totaled $14,500. Fourteen local organizations were the beneficiaries of these funds.
- We are honored for our win in the Outdoor Events Category of the inaugural Great Outdoor Awards last October. More information on the Awards can be found at creationnorthwest.org
