Bellingham Symphony Opening Concert Features Pianist Jon Kimura Parker

Internationally-renowned Pianist Jon Kimura Parker will join the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra on September 29 at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham, WA to present Music in Motion—an energetic and expressive program, celebrating various styles of dance music. A founding member of the Montrose Trio, Parker has appeared as a soloist across the globe, including performances at the Kennedy Center, Berlin Philharmoie, and the Sydney Opera House.

The concert will begin with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, commonly considered one of the most popular piano concertos ever written. The program continues with Jules Massenet’s “Ballet Suite” from the Le Cid opera, composed in seven parts—each celebrating a popular regional dance form, using rhythm and percussion to paint a picturesque and romantic image of Spain.

Lastly, the concert will close with Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2—an elegant and seductive tribute to the Danzón style of dance, which originated in Cuba and continues to thrive in Mexico.

“I am thrilled to welcome Jon Kimura Parker to our stage for this virtuosic, lush, and engaging program” says Music Director Yaniv Attar. “I know our audience will be delighted by Parker’s soulful artistry and masterful technique, and I anticipate a full house as we kick off our 44th season with a truly memorable afternoon of music.”

Sunday, September 29 at 3 p.m. at Mount Baker Theatre. Tickets start at $15. For details, call the Mount Baker Theatre Box Office at (360) 734-6080 or visit the BSO website at www.bellinghamsymphony.org.

Doors open at 2 p.m. A pre-concert lecture about the program by Dr. Ryan Dudenbostel will take place in the Walton Theatre, beginning at 2:15 p.m. These lectures are free for ticket-holders, but seats fill up quickly, so please plan accordingly.
