The North Cascades National Park Celebrates 50th Anniversary

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex, the sprawling reserve that includes the North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake and the Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas in the upper left corner of Washington State. The North Cascades Institute celebrates this milestone in the ongoing story of these mountains and salutes the people who, over the past century, have championed their protection, appreciation and stewardship. The magnificent public lands are here today for all of us to enjoy, recreate, recharge and learn in because of the earlier generations' forward-thinking stewardship and activism.         We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
