Studio Ghibli’s Takahata Isao Retrospective at The Pickford in May

A full retrospective of Takahata Isao's work under Studio Ghibli—the legendary animation studio he co-founded with Miyazaki Hayao—will be screening each Thursday in May. Part of Cinema East 2024-2025, presented by Western Washington Libraries.

Takahata Isao (1935–2018), one of the three co-founders of Studio Ghibli alongside filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki, crafted a diverse and unique body of work. This series showcases all of Takahata’s Ghibli films, starting with the haunting 1988 World War II drama GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, along with a selection of his works from his career at Studio Ghibli. Takahata experimented with various animation styles throughout his career—sometimes creating films that resembled the Studio Ghibli house-style and at other times exploring entirely different visual approaches that distinguish him from his creative partner, Miyazaki. Join us in celebrating one of animation's greatest visionaries, Thursdays in May at Pickford Film Center.

All films screened at 11:00 AM and 7:45 PM.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
