Where does your food come from? Yes, most of it comes from the grocery store, but what about the ingredients in those packaged products? As a small business passionate about protecting environmental health, we’re incredibly proud to know exactly where the ingredients in our Shrub and vinegar come from - and who grows them!
Shrub Farm’s Turmeric & Carrot Shrub embodies our philosophy and passion. It also tells our story. Josh and Tomo, our founders, met on Maui at massage school. Shrub Farm (and their son, Harley!) was born on the island. And the turmeric in this Shrub is grown organically by our friends at Hale Akua on Maui. Hale Akua is a lush farm and learning center where the earth is cherished and honored. We think that you can taste the love that goes into the soil - and into the turmeric.
Turmeric is an especially potent plant, renowned as much for its golden hue as its healing properties. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb in India and around the world. What exactly makes turmeric so extraordinary? A lot has to do with its curcumin content. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory compound that also contains high levels of antioxidants. Since our apple cider vinegar is a potent extractant, and we infuse it with whole turmeric, you’re getting the benefits of this wonderful plant. This turmeric has a rich, fresh taste that makes your whole body come alive. It’s incredibly invigorating!
We love staying connected to our island roots, and we’re so excited to be able to partner with organic farms on Maui, where we first learned the art of Shrub-making. Of course, now that we’re based in Washington State, we’re passionate about supporting local farms and farmers in our home state. Cascadia - the bioregion that makes up most of Oregon, Washington, and southern British Columbia - is a fertile agricultural wonderland, where sun, rain, and care grow some of the finest fruits and vegetables around.
The carrots in our Turmeric & Carrot Shrub are grown on Hopewell Farm in Everson, WA. Everson is a beautiful town in rural Whatcom County, and this farm exemplifies the best of what our county offers. It’s all organic and salmon safe too, which means that the farm uses agricultural practices that protect water quality and wildlife habitats. Hopewell Farm is nestled in the foothills of the Cascades, and these carrots grow under the majestic eye of Mount Baker a.k.a. Koma Kulshan. They’re juicy and full of Vitamin A - a perfect sunset-col- ored complement to Hawaiian turmeric.
And at the heart of all our Shrub is Apple State Vinegar, raw organic apple cider vinegar that is good for the planet and good for you, too! This vinegar contains the Mother of vinegar, which means that it is full of probiotics and prebiotics that nourish a healthy digestive system. Our organic apple farmers support soil health, which in turn benefits rivers, lakes, and eventually the ocean. We give 6% of all Apple State Vinegar profits to nonprofits that support marine health and orca protection. We’re also part of 1% for the Planet, which means we donate 1% of our total sales to environmental charities.
If we could bottle who we are as a business, a family, and as human beings, it would be this Shrub - lively, earthy, vibrant, and benefiting both nature and human health. Visit our website AppleStateVinegar.com and pick up a bottle
