Community invited to Treaty of Point Elliott panel event Jan. 25 at Whatcom Community College

Signed in 1855, the Treaty of Point Elliott is an integral part of the history of the greater Puget Sound and has had tremendous impacts on the tribal rights, culture, livelihood, and history as well as the traditional lands of tribes within the region. A panel discussion, held 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 25 in Whatcom Community College’s Heiner Theater, will explore the past, present, and future impacts of the treaty. Panelists will discuss the Treaty of Point Elliott from legal, personal, and historical perspectives. This event is part of the WCC Campus Diversity Committee’s The Equity Project, which is exploring the history of the Coast Salish Peoples in 2018-19. The event is free and open to the community. Parking at WCC is free. Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, WA is regularly recognized as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.         We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
