Sumas Historical Society and Museum are celebrating Sumas Pioneer Day Saturday, June 23 from 12 pm – 4 pm with historical-themed activities planned for the entire family. Festivities will take place both inside and outside the museum. Take a step back in time and pan for gold in a trough of sand and pebbles, experience hands-on laundry using a hand beater with bubbles, or compete in a feed sack race. There will also be cornhole games, a station for coloring and cutting out paper dolls, and photo ops. The mission of the museum is to inform the community and preserve the history of Sumas. The museum was built in the early 1900’s, originally as a parsonage for a Methodist church. The building became a museum in 2016 with approval from the Sumas City Council. The collection includes historic photographs and memorabilia depicting a typical Sumas home of the early 1900s. Objects within the museum depict scenes of laundry day, farming, education, geology, local commerce and correspondences from the people in that era. Donations of family stories and artifacts of Sumas history are greatly appreciated.
