Appel Farms is proud to announce that owner, Ruth Appel is among the 2017 class of American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professionals® (ACS CCPs®). She is part of an elite group of individuals who passed the 7th ACS Certified Cheese Professional® Exam. The exam was held on July 26, 2017, in Denver, CO. ACS CCPs® currently total nearly 900 individuals in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Europe. For a full list of ACS CCPs®, visit www.cheesesociety.org. The ACS Certified Cheese Professional® Exam is the first and only exam of its kind. It was established by the American Cheese Society to encourage high standards of comprehensive cheese knowledge and service for professionals in all areas of the industry. The exam is based on the knowledge and skills required to successfully perform cheese-related tasks in jobs across the industry. Testing encompasses a broad range of topics including raw ingredients, the cheesemaking process, storing and handling cheese, selecting distributors, marketing and communicating about cheese, nutrition, and regulations and sanitation. Appel has been working in the cheese and dairy industry for close to twenty years.  Her passion is for educating the public on nutrition, cooking, pairing, and enjoying cheese. Each ACS CCPs® is required to demonstrate continued active participation and professional development within the industry to maintain their credentials, and they must re-certify every three years. To learn more about the Certified Cheese Professional® Exam, visit www.cheesesociety.org. The Cheese Shoppe at Appel Farms is located at 6605 Northwest Road in Ferndale. It is open Monday - Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Samples are available at our full service cheese counter. The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch serving homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps, and fresh baked goods, as well as espresso and milkshakes using ice cream made on the farm.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
