Second Annual Whatcom Housing Week, Oct. 21-25

Bellingham, WA, September 27, 2018 – The Whatcom Housing Alliance, a new coalition created to help solve the housing crisis, announces the second annual Whatcom Housing Week, Sunday, October 21st – Thursday, October 25th. Housing Week aims to build awareness and support for innovative housing solutions that create diverse, vibrant, and healthy homes for all. Housing week will feature free: ·         Presentations from community experts ·         Deep-dive workshops ·         Housing tours ·         Housing Week Luminary Awards Reception   As the regional housing crisis continues to intensify, now is the time to have important conversations and spur action to increase affordability, livability, and end homelessness. Housing Week partners and sponsors have a shared goal to increase opportunities for people of all income levels, from the “missing middle” to low-income and beyond. They hope this event will provide the education and awareness to empower advocates and increase dialogue about positive solutions. Highlights from Housing Week include the Whatcom Housing Alliance’s kickoff event, the Downtown Housing Tour, where participants can learn more about different downtown housing options and the benefits they bring to creating a vibrant city. There will also be a four-part lunch series led by community experts on how we can act now to move the needle toward real, county-wide solutions. Each helps participants understand how the housing gap is linked to homelessness, community health, and the local economy. Members of the Whatcom Housing Alliance include Unity Care NW, Opportunity Council, City of Bellingham, Sustainable Connections, Habitat for Humanity Whatcom County, Lydia Place, Bellingham Tenants Union, Paul Schissler & Associates, and the Kulshan Community Land Trust. Whatcom Housing Week is made possible by generous support from the City of Bellingham, Whatcom Community Foundation, Whatcom County Association of Realtors, the Chuckanut Health Foundation, the Whatcom County Health Department, Port of Bellingham, and Community Health Plan of Washington.   What: Whatcom Housing Week When: Sunday, October 21st - Thursday, October 25th Where: Various locations around Bellingham Cost: All events are free and open to the public More info at: https://whatcomhousingalliance.org/projects/whatcom-housing-week/

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
