Spark Museum of Electrical Invention in Bellingham will host it's official grand re-opening celebration this coming weekend, Oct. 13-14, 2012, with extended hours, free admission to all galleries and an explosive new electrical show you don't want to miss! The collection is incredible, including actual light bulbs made by Thomas Edison, the telephone used in the first transcontinental call, and a shocking array of devices from the past 4 centuries. Anyone with an interest in science or history or communication will be intrigued. Here are some tips for visiting: Location: Spark Museum is located at 1312 Bay Street, which is in downtown Bellingham. The easiest I-5 freeway exit for downtown is 252. Head west on Lakeway Drive, which turns into Holly Street as it passes through Bellingham's downtown core. Turn right on Bay Street to find the Spark Museum. Holly Street is one-way heading west into downtown. On either side of it are Magnolia and Chestnut streets, which are both one-way heading east, back toward Lakeway Drive and the freeway. Parking: Bay Street is a short little block, so there may not be a space available directly in front of the museum. It often takes a trip around the block or two to find a space. Street parking in downtown Bellingham is free on the weekends, evenings and holidays (which is GREAT for this weekend). And it is an easy stroll on spacious sidewalks to the museum. If you are visiting on a weekday however, note that downtown parking spaces are metered and heavily patrolled on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is 75 cents per hour. If you plan to visit Spark Museum during these times, bring plenty of quarters for the meter. The spaces directly in front of Spark Museum have new electronic pay stations that accept credit cards as well. Special Hours: Spark Museum hours for this special weekend are Saturday, Oct. 13 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Click here to see the full list of events for the celebration. Spark Museum's regular hours are: Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Places to Eat Nearby: Downtown Bellingham is loaded with great places to eat. Right next door to Spark Museum is Bayou on Bay, which features hearty Cajun-style food for lunch and dinner and a full bar. It also has outdoor seating when the weather is sunny. Across the street from Spark Museum is Woods Coffee, which serves lattes and sandwiches and even has some gluten free items. On the north end of the block is Mount Bakery - a great spot for breakfast and lunch featuring crepes and French pastries. Next door to it is Temple Bar - an upscale spot for dinner and drinks.
