The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra's Scheherazade & Shostakovich will take the Mount Baker stage by storm on Sunday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham. The concert will begin with a performance of Alexander Glazunov's Prelude and Fugue in D minor by pianist Philip Fisher. To follow, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra will join Fisher to perform Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, a playful concerto written by the composer for his son, Maxim. As a youth, Mr. Fisher performed the concerto for Maxim himself, so he has a particular connection to this masterful work. The afternoon will close with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's most beloved piece, Scheherazade, a symphonic suite based on One Thousand and One Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. "We are thrilled to have pianist Philip Fisher joining us for Shostakovich's witty and playful Piano Concerto No. 2," says Music Director Yaniv Attar. "Given his history with this piece, Fisher is sure to bring a personal and heartwarming touch to his performance. To top off the evening, Scheherazade is sure to be an instant favorite, weaving fantastical tales in our listeners' imaginations and leaving our audience mesmerized by the storytelling power of music."
