From the solemn Blessing of the Fleet and flag raising, colorful boat parade and morning and evening parties, BYC’s Season Opening has always been a daylong celebration. This year, BYC is also hosting opera star Carmen Souza to sing the national anthems of the US and Canada during the public ceremonies which start at 10:45.
Carmen is a young lyric Mezzo-soprano from Bellingham, WA. Her experience includes roles as Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Pacific Northwest Opera, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Maria in West Side Story and Amalia in She Loves Me.
“We are so pleased Carmen was able to join us before she leaves to perform in Europe,” said Mike Unger, Fleet Captain. “We often have music at the Club and include the anthems at Opening Day annually, but having a professional opera singer is a first and a treat for our members and the public. We feel fortunate to celebrate a rising star from Bellingham as well as be entertained by her,” he added.
Bellingham Yacht Club is open year-round with many social activities in the winter and boating during the season.
Opening Day includes a champagne breakfast for members and member guests only, public ceremonies including the national anthems and an evening party for members and registered parade participants. The full schedule and parade registration is available at https://byc.org/event/zitkKKyps3.
Bellingham Yacht Club is also running a membership drive through May 14th. Those who apply and are accepted by May 3rd are welcome to all the Opening Day festivities. Membership information is available at https://byc.org/membership.
The Bellingham Yacht Club is the oldest yacht club in Bellingham. Located on the Squalicum waterfront, the facility has a full bar and Event Center which can be rented by the public. For more information, visit https://byc.org/.
