BSO’s March 23 “Making Waves” Concert Features Works by Mozart, Debussy, Rautavaara, and John Williams

This concert will also include the announcement of BSO’s 50th season—and an extraordinary soloist who will perform in Bellingham for the first time

The Bellingham Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce its March 23rd concert at the historic Mount Baker Theatre. “Making Waves” features guest soloist Milica Jelača Jovanović and a repertoire of works by Mozart, Debussy, John Williams, and Rautavaara.

Bellingham local Jelača Jovanović was born into a family of professional musicians in Belgrade, Serbia, and began giving recitals at the age of 8. She has appeared as a soloist with the Seattle Philharmonic in Benaroya Hall, the Bainbridge Symphony, Lake Union Civic Orchestra (LUCO), Whatcom Symphony, Western Washington University Symphony, Sioux City Symphony, and Radio TV Belgrade Symphonic Orchestra.  She opened the 2018/19 Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra season in Benaroya Hall, and the 2023/24 Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra season. Later this year, to mark 50 years since Shostakovich’s death, she will perform as a soloist in his Piano Concerto No. 1 with LUCO.

Jelača Jovanović’s daughter, Sehome High School junior Maria Horja, recently performed with the symphony, as well, to nearly 1,500 area students at BSO's annual Educational Concert. Horja was the winner of BSO’s 2024 Young Artist Competition.

Tickets and more details are available at https://www.bellinghamsymphony.org/event/making-waves

The concert repertoire is as follows and will run approximately 100 minutes with intermission:

Einojuhani Rautavaara | Cantus Arcticus, Concerto for Birds and Orchestra Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Piano Concerto No. 23 A major K. 488  John Williams | Theme From “Jaws" Claude Debussy | La Mer

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
