Celebrate Local Food During September Eat Local Month

Sustainable Connections is excited to celebrate September Eat Local Month, a month-long celebration of eating local food and honoring those who grow, raise, harvest, and prepare it to share with this community. Eat Local Month will feature the Whatcom County Farm Tour and the Sandwich Showdown, two exciting events that will inspire connection, learning, and delight.

The Whatcom County Farm Tour is a beloved highlight of Eat Local Month. On September 13th from 10am-4pm, fifteen farms in Whatcom County will open their (barn) doors for visitors to get a behind-the-scenes look at how food gets from the farm to their plate. The Farm Tour is a free, family-friendly opportunity to connect with farmers, purchase delicious local products, and gain an appreciation for the hard work that goes into growing food.

The Sandwich Showdown will celebrate the farm-to-table flavors of this community all month long. This sandwich competition brings together local restaurants, chefs, and food enthusiasts for a month-long celebration of mouthwatering sandwiches that show off their “local layers”. From classic favorites to innovative twists (including a whole category for ‘Sorta Sandwiches’), there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Folks can vote on their favorite sandwich, and a winner will be crowned at the end of the month.

Eat Local Month will also offer opportunities to meet local farmers, visit markets, and experience the food and farming culture of this region. “We’re fortunate to have so many incredible chefs, farmers, and fishermen in our community,” says Jessica Gillis, Sustainable Connections’ Food & Farming Program Manager. “Eat Local Month is a celebration of all the connections that bring food from the farm to our plates.”

Sustainable Connections is thrilled to be able to share opportunities to dive deeper into the rich agricultural and culinary worlds of Northwest Washington and Whatcom County.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
