Registration is open for a June 9 Author Event at Village Books with Dr. Debu Majumdar, author of Night Jasmine Tree. Proof of full vaccination and masking are required to attend the event. Registration is needed to manage the capacity to 50—to be done through online planning site Eventbrite. There will be two ticket types 1) a $5 ticket that acts as a voucher toward purchase of merchandise on the day of the event, and 2) a purchase of the book (in advance or on the day) automatically registers the buyer for the event.
Debu Majumdar will give a presentation of his Somerset literary Award-winning novel, which is contemporary fiction describing the hidden backstory of an Indian man’s immigration to America because of caste conflicts—a story of love, forgiveness, and rise to the call of his innate heart. The novel shows a cathartic triumph of the human spirit—moving, realistic, and uplifting. The author will not only talk about the literary aspects of the novel, but of the caste system in India, which is often misunderstood in the west. He will also talk about the problems faced by immigrants in the U.S. - their adjustments to a totally different culture and struggle to find a place in society.
Book Summary: Night Jasmine Tree describes how the high caste protagonist falls in love with a lower caste girl in college, but his love, and choices, are rejected by his conservative family. They marry and emigrate, but deep emotional wounds continue to torment him even after they are well settled in the U.S. After retirement, he tells his grandchildren stories of his childhood and youth, but those poignant and heartwarming stories, touching and sublime by themselves, reveal his silent torment and struggles that originated in India and enhanced his unexpressed problems. His psychological sufferings for his vows to forget his family and never to return to India deepened with time. How long can the protagonist carry on his playful veneer with his grandchildren? Finally, however, the protagonist overcomes all obstacles of familial rejection to come to love and forgiveness and rises to the call of his innate heart. An unforgettable novel.
