Derek Long to Resign as Executive Director of Sustainable Connections

After nearly 24 years of leadership and service, Sustainable Connections' Executive Director and co-founder, Derek Long, has announced his resignation. Long, who co-founded Sustainable Connections in 2002, will step down from his role at the end of October.

After a successful tenure, during which Long significantly grew the organization’s positive community impact by launching new programs and initiatives, he has decided it is time to offer space for other leaders to guide the organization into the future.

The Sustainable Connections Board of Directors will determine a transition plan, including a timeline for an Executive Director search, and announce the next steps in the coming weeks.

The organization remains committed to its mission and vision and doesn’t anticipate any changes to existing programming or operations.

"Our community is simply a better place to live thanks to the vision and work that Derek accomplished. His legacy is profound and lasting. All of us appreciate his commitment to ensuring that our present and future are strong and resilient," said Board President, Bruce Tabb. "We look forward to celebrating his legacy as Sustainable Connections enters its next chapter."

Please see https://sustainableconnections.org/about-us/ for a message from Long.

More information will be shared about this transition on the Sustainable Connections website (sustainableconnections.org).

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
