Winter Season Fire-Making Skills with Northwest Natura

If there is one bushcraft skill to have, it is how to make a fire! The skills we will cover in this immersive outdoor workshop include: - Survival Priorities - What to look for when you’re out foraging for firewood - Discover tinder materials, fatwood, and finding dry materials - Practicing intentional and energy-efficient methods for successfully making a fire outdoors without a lighter - How to process natural materials for optimal flammability - Knife and ax skills - Feathersticks - Fire-making basics - Using a ferrocerium rod - Making charcloth for flint & steel - Plant ID will be sprinkled into the lesson - Knowledge of how to process natural materials in order to catch a spark to produce a lifesaving fire, or just a recreational one imparts a closer understanding of the world around us and thus a more intimate connection to the outdoors.

After taking this course, your confidence in your ability to make a fire will be just one of the takeaways.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
