Koma Kulshan Chapter Meeting: Bryophytes as Windows Into Past Climates and Present Landscapes

For many botanists, bryophytes are an infamous group—tiny, taxonomically intricate, and often frustratingly subtle in their morphology. Yet beyond the tedious microscopy and myriad of taxonomic keys, bryophytes offer a unique insight into the environmental nuances of a landscape and the historical forces that shaped its flora.

In this talk, Miles Berkey will give a brief introduction to bryophytes, provide an overview of their biology, and explore how past climatic patterns have influenced their present-day distributions. Prior registration is required for this virtual event.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
