Western Symphony Orchestra presents Farah, Ellington, and Beethoven

Join the Western Symphony Orchestra for an uplifting evening of music representing over 200 years of artistic and political history.

The program opens with the world premiere of the dream-like Sea Under Stars by Amara Farah (BMus, 2025), winner of Western’s annual Composition Commission Competition.

Next is the final work of the American legend Duke Ellington: Three Black Kings, an evocative triptych of the Magi Balthazar, King Solomon, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Closing the evening is the iconic “Eroica” Symphony of Beethoven, a work begun in homage to Napoleon Bonaparte, but later rededicated as a full-throated rebuke of tyranny and a celebration of the heroism of all who resist it.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
