Ex Nihilo - Matthew Remsbecher Solo Exhibition

Sophia Grace Gallery in Ferndale reopens January 24 with Ex Nihilo, a solo exhibition by Matthew Remsbecher. The show features black-on-black paintings made with plaster and paint—works that shift subtly as viewers move closer, step back, and spend time looking.

Curated by Sophia Grace Kidd, Ex Nihilo draws on the tradition of black painting while staying grounded in Pacific Northwest values of craft and restraint. It’s also the perfect exhibition for anyone who hates Valentine’s Day: quiet, unsentimental, and refreshingly honest. T

he opening includes a VIP gathering and gallery reception with food by Leader Block Trattoria & Bar.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
