Fire Resilient Landscaping in Western Washington

The Koma Kulshan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society is holding their March meeting. Join for an in-person presentation from Marlene Finley entitled Fire Resilient Landscaping in Western Washington.

Despite its wet reputation, Western Washington is no longer immune from wildfire. Prolonged dry spells mean higher fire danger in our region. Learn what you can do to protect your home and garden from wildfire. Marlene will share practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of burning embers igniting your home, outbuildings or garden landscape.

Regular home and garden maintenance practices can be life savers. While no plants are "fire resistant", some plants are more flammable than others. Marlene is past President of WSU Skagit County Master Gardener Foundation and lives in Anacortes. After years of working for the USFS and NPS, she has first hand experience working on wildland fires, supporting large scale fuel reduction projects and participating in prescribed burns.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
