The Sphagnum Mosses of Washington State - Their Ecology, Taxonomy, and Other Fascinating Features

The Koma Kulshan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society is holding their April meeting. Join for an in-person presentation from Sarah Spear Cooke. This talk will include everything Sphagnum! There will be a discussion of the different species found in Washington in light of each species habitat preferences. And, there will be special coverage of the "magic" sphagnum bogs in our region including theories on their formation since the last ice age and where to find them in the landscape.

But, Sphagnum species are found all over! Some are found in forests, some in alpine areas and some even in coastal bogs. Join the magic that is Sphagnum! Sarah has 38 years of experience in wetlands ecological research and environmental consulting and 47 years of experience in ecological and geological research. She works on habitat restoration, weed identification and control; rare plant surveys and vegetation mapping; soil assessments; watershed analysis; and environmental assessments.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
