Summer & Winter Weaving

Registration Deadline: Monday, March 30, 12:00 pm

“Summer and Winter” is a traditional weave you’ve seen in everything from tea towels to rugs. It is so named because it makes a reversible cloth, traditionally with one side light colored, the other dark. Summer and Winter is a two-shuttle block weave and offers some wonderful possibility for design, both in how the blocks are arranged and in how the treadling is done. Looms are to be warped prior to the first class, following directions provided by the instructor. You may choose your own colors for warp and weft from materials provided, or bring suitable yarns of your own. You may use one of the studio harness looms or bring your own. In addition to projects on individual looms, there will be a couple of looms set up to be used “round robin” style, so you can explore other applications of Summer and Winter. Students should have some familiarity with warping a loom, although help will be available.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
