Heart of Play Mural Celebration

Join Heart of Play during the Allied Arts Children’s Art Walk for an evening of creativity, community, and hands-on play in downtown Bellingham! Heart of Play—an emerging children’s museum in the making—is bringing playful experiences into the community as we build toward a future large-scale children’s museum for Whatcom County.

Start across the street at Allied Arts, where Coast Salish artist Jason LaClair will lead a community mural painting. The murals were chosen by community vote, designed by Jason, and now it’s time to bring them to life—kids and families are invited to help paint and make their mark. Then head to Hotel Leo to explore and play with HOP's big green blocks—open-ended materials that spark imagination and connection for children of all ages.

This community event celebrates art, belonging, and play while offering a glimpse into Heart of Play’s vision: creating inclusive, accessible spaces where all children and families belong.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
