Fearless Illustration: Ink, Watercolor, and Digital

The illustration process is such a unique experience. There are so many ways to accomplish each step. But I have found, through my experience in natural science illustration and as a cartoonist, a process that lets me take advantage of the easy-to-manipulate tools in digital illustration with the tactile experience of traditional art media.

In this class, we will work through digital pencils, inks with technical pen, illustrative watercolor, and digital clean-up and manipulation of the finished illustration. This is not a class for the timid. **Be brave!** Try a new process that let’s you create the illustration that *you* want. Everyone in the class will be making their own unique illustration, but don’t fear. We will talk about composition in that very first class, as well as finding and using references. Bring your swirling ideas and we will hone it down to a single image. You will need to bring to the first and last class a laptop and tablet (or 2-in-1) and a digital pen.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
