WCC Presents Norbert Rodenkirchen: Medieval Echoes

Norbert Rodenkirchen of the internationally acclaimed early music ensembles Sequentia, Dialogos and Candens Lilium presents the contemplative art of extemporized flute playing in various medieval styles through the centuries.

Sequences of Notker Balbulus (9th ct.), anonymous lais, early minstrel tunes and dances are performed alongside instrumental versions of music by Guillaume de Machaut (14th ct.). The inner reflections of beautiful original melodies from the Middle Ages throughout the program will be extended at some special moments with “Oriental repercussions” – reflecting the various origins of Occitan music as an echo from far away – and also at other spots with dreamlike “Reverdies medievales” for solo flute which find their artistic focus based on romantic/impressionistic “fin de siecle” arrangements of medieval compositions.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
