Western Symphony Orchestra presents Concerto Competition Winners

Come join the Western Symphony Orchestra and the three outstanding student winners of the annual WWU Concerto Competition for an evening of inspiring, powerful music.

Jacob Anderson will open the program with the French composer and percussionist Emmanuel Séjourné’s evocative Concerto for Marimba and Strings. Next, pianist Emilie Buhl will perform “Er Huang,” Qigang Chen’s stunning masterpiece blending Chinese opera melodies with French impressionist colors. And finally, soprano Mia Ward will sing three arias from Daniel Catán’s opera “Florencia en el Amazonas”, a vivid homage to the magical realism of Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. Capping off the evening is a showpiece for the full orchestra: Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber,” a brilliant, virtuosic reimagining of music composed by another German master over a century earlier.

Ticket proceeds go toward funding the WSO’s upcoming concert tour of Germany in June, 2027!

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
